Only 1 minicar out of 11 tested achieves an acceptable rating in the small overlap front crash test. Minicars are the worst performing group of any that IIHS has evaluated in the small overlap test program so far.

Toyota RAV4 earns poor rating in new crash test

The Toyota RAV4 earns a poor rating for protecting people in small overlap front crashes. The small SUV was redesigned for the 2013 model year, but the changes weren’t enough to lift the RAV4’s performance in the Institute’s challenging test. A combination of poor structure and inadequate control of the dummy’s movement prevented the RAV4 from earning a better rating.

Redesigned Mitsubishi Outlander earns Top Safety Pick+

The 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander, a small SUV, earns the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award for good performance in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, rollover and rear crash evaluations.

IIHS safety awards for 2014 go to 39 vehicles

Twenty-two vehicles earn the Institute’s highest safety award for 2014, Top Safety Pick+, thanks to a high level of protection in crashes and the availability of front crash prevention technology to avoid many collisions in the first place. An additional 17 earn Top Safety Pick by meeting the crashworthiness criteria alone.

Subaru adds to its list of Top Safety Pick+ winners

The 2014 Subaru Impreza and XV Crosstrek are the latest models to be added to the list of IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award winners. Structural changes improved occupant protection in 2014 models, and the vehicles earned good ratings in all five of the Institute’s crashworthiness tests.
